Antivirus Software - Benefits of 30 Day Trials

by patmore 11. March 2010 20:08

Whether you have recently purchased a new computer or just want to secure your old reliable (or not so reliable in some cases), there are so many different types of antivirus software out there that it is almost impossible not to find something that will please you.

Although not tangible, antivirus software comes in different shapes and sizes, literally. The layout of the software can vary depending on which brand and which distribution you purchase. Subsequently there are two decisions you need to make when you buy antivirus. Three if you include your budget range within the decision process.

The first thing to consider is 'do you need antivirus software'. Some computers do not require protection, such as apple macs and linux based operating systems. Secondly, you should consider what brand you should purchase. Usually one would think that comparing antivirus software is like comparing eggs with eggs; they are the same. But this isn't always the case. Many users have different opinions on antivirus software.

Ultimately the decision is yours. People tend to choose the application with the biggest market share, such as McAfee or Symantec. However, this is not such a good idea with so many better but lesser known products available.

You might want to visit sites that offer reviews on antivirus products. Some retailers allow the purchaser to return and write a review on the product they purchased. If you use this method you will most likely get a range of honest reviews from both novice and power users.

The next and best method is to is to simply trial a selection of products prior to purchase. Most antivirus products are available for a 30 day trial prior to purchase. This enables you to take a test trial and ensure the product is suitable for you and your computer before you part with your hard earned money.

Ultimately, because software can be easily uninstalled and replaced, you are rarely forced to stick with any provider for any means. Antivirus internet security software is not an exception. So go on, trial some software and purchase the one that's right for you. If after a while you change your mind, you will only have to wait for the remainder of the licence before you are able to swap for a different brand.

Antivirus Software - What exactly does it do?

by patmore 9. March 2010 17:08

Antivirus software is a pc program that detects, identifies, prevents and takes action to disarm or remove malicious software programs such as viruses and worms. Malware (which is derived from combining the terms malicious and software) is the term generally used to refer to such harmful programs.

Let us look at some of them:

Viruses: These are programs that attach themselves to other programs or documents and replicate to cause damage to PC.

Worms: These are specifically designed to make extensive use of emails to spread rapidly.

Trojans: These are typically programs which appear harmless but are damaging and malicious in intent.

Zombies: Are programs that install themselves on PCs and remain dormant until an external event triggers them into action. They can damage the computer, steal personal information to transmit it to an unauthorised email account or even set up a remote control access to one's computer.

All of these malware are referred to as viruses in common parlance.

Antivirus is intended to prevent, detect, disable or remove from the PC all malware which is done by the antivirus engine which scans the PC to look for tell-tale signs of these malicious programs. This is called signature based detection and involves searching for known malicious patterns in executable code.

Once detected the software takes action such as to clean, delete or quarantine. However, it is possible for a user to be infected with a new virus with no signature existing. These viruses can be detected by looking for known malicious code or slight variations of such codes in files.

It is important to understand how viruses spread. With increasing use of the internet the most common route for their spread is obviously through email. They can also spread by sharing disks, network drives and by internet downloads. They can not spread on their own and must be run or executed by some one to cause damage.

Viruses can infect the boot sector ot the PC if the user inadevrtantly, boots his PC from an infected disk. Other viruses can spread by simply opening an infected document.

In order to efficiently counter such threats, one needs to buy antivirus software that is updated regularly, is easy to use, detects and cleans all threats, and offers a comprehensive computer protection package such as Kaspersky Antivirus and Kaspersky Internet Security.

New P2P file sharing Worm Detected - Spybot.AKB

by patmore 23. February 2010 16:51

Experts have identified a worm that spreads through P2P networks and emails called Spybot.AKB.

The worm which was recently detected fools users by appearing as a social network invitation or a Google job application response. Once installed, it redirects searche results for keywords such as ‘hotel’, ‘weather, or ‘airlines’ to infected false pages.

Spybot.AKB spreads itself via email or peer-to-peer file sharing. One email disguises itself as be a Twitter invite from another user, containing a file that users supposedly run to join. The P2P infection involves the worm copying and renaming itself with the filename of a popular windows application, such as Norton Antivirus.

Spybot.AKB is self-protecting. It will “perform a set of actions to compromise the security level of infected PCs, adding itself to Windows firewall whitelist rules and disabling the error reporting service and user access control.

Be alert on file sharing sites and make sure your antivirus software is up to date.

Kaspersky Blocks Google Advertising Sites

by patmore 27. January 2010 16:40

Kaspersky received an increase in complaints after it began blocking sites with Google ads yesterday.

After a dodgy signature was added to its databases the russian products began blocking some pages which display Google Adsense advertising, mistakingly claiming the pages contained the malicious program Trojan.JS.Redirector.ar.

Kaspersky admitted the mistake yesterday. "An incorrect signature was added to the company's antivirus databases on 25 January at 07:00 Moscow time (GMT+3). As a result, Kaspersky Lab products erroneously blocked some legitimate websites containing the link on script http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js, which is used in the contextual advertising system Google Adsense," said the antivirus company in a statement.

However, Kaspersky moved quickly to fix  the issue. "The problem was quickly resolved and by 19:00 Moscow time the company's products had stopped generating alerts for legitimate Internet pages," Kaspersky said.

This is not the first time that anti-malware companies' mistakes have impacted on Google - In 2006 Norton Internet Security also blocked AdSense-based sites - Poor Google!

Websense has launched a a new feature set for its spam protection service that protects Facebook users against malware.

"The Defensio application helps companies protect their brand reputation and their 'fans' from spam or malicious content on their corporate Facebook pages," said Websense.

As we have previously reported, Facebook is a popular target for malicious attacks including Koobface worms that spread themselves by posting malicious links on Facebook users' walls and several legitimate Facebook applications have been hacked.

It has been found that several Facebook applications can be hacked by compromising software on the users' own PCs.

Dial up trojans of today targeting mobile phones

by patmore 20. January 2010 07:42

A new wave of malicious dialers is hitting users of mobile phones according to experts at CA Security.

The trojans use the Java 2 Micro Edition programming language and make infected handsets send SMS messages to very high-cost phone numbers, causing great expense to the victim.

"As soon as the application is loaded, this malicious software starts to send premium text messages," CA warned on Tuesday. "The messages sent out are in the typical format to invoke premium services and land the mobile user with heavy mobile bills without the user's knowledge and consent."

Malware that automatically dials expensive telephone numbers were very rife ten years ago when dial-up internet services required a modem to connect to a phone line. With the growth of broadband connections the frequency of dialers disappeared.

The dramatic increase of smart phone use that can run software created by anyone has given malicious dialers a new opportunity. Similar to their counterparts ten years ago, the dialers of today usually dial expensive porn services. Further information can be found on the CA Blog.

Mobile antivirus software will soon be required on all phones to help protect against malicious threats.

Facebook has chosen McAfee to help protect its users. Facebook and McAfee have created a custom scanning repair toolset that will target Facebook's 350 milllion users.

As reported previously in our blog, Facebook needs all the anti-malware help it can get - Koobface has been spreading widely using Facebook and its now time for action!

Facebook will use a custom security tool developed by McAfee to clean users' computers when their accounts become infected.

Whilst an innovative concept, we believe there are better choices already available to combat the growing trend in Social Media Malware.

In December, AV-Comparatives researchers performed a comparative test on 16 popular anti-virus software applications, measuring the impact of the software on system resources and performance.

The tests were conducted to demonstrate to what extent various anti-virus software programs slow the performance of common computer tasks.

AV-Comparatives says that the Kaspersky Lab software scored higher than anti-virus solutions from Avast, AVG, BitDefender, Eset, G Data, McAfee, Microsoft and Symantec.
