Apple iPad set to become hackers new target

by patmore 1. June 2010 19:48

Apple iPad

The Apple iPad is now on sale within the UK and is predicted to sell extremely well. Concerns are being voiced that this device is set to become a new platform for hackers.

The vice president at Lumension, Alan Bentley, said "It is not just the obvious risk of prying eyes when consumers browse confidential corporate data on the bigger screen, there are other data leakage points to consider", he said. "First, the sought-after device is likely to become the target for theft, placing yet more emphasis on businesses to ensure that they have a) approved the use and b) have some control over the data that is being stored off network", he added.

The hacking community, he explained, is attracted to meaningful targets and the more popular the platform the increased chance they will be successful. "The fact that the iPad joins the iPhone, Mac and Google Chrome to use the WebKit open-source browser, means the browser is likely to become a more popular target for the hacker community", he said.

"Times are changing and the consumerisation of IT continues to trend. Businesses need to implement the right policies around the use of personal technology in the workplace, if they want to avoid leaving a gaping hole in their security posture", he added.

ESET Eases the Pain of Swapping Antivirus Solutions

by patmore 9. April 2010 22:10

One of the hardest things for security vendors in the present climate is trying to persuade IT professionals to swap out their existing solution for another. Even if the existing solution isn't quite right, doesn't quite do what it needs to do or doesn't have all the features required, it's still an added expense in terms of both time and money, that the IT department can do without.

ESET is one security vendor that has really taken this on board and has put together a promotion to try and ease the expense of swapping business antivirus solutions.

ESET are currently offering businesses who are looking to purchase 50 licences or more the following:

  • They will buy out the remaining term of your existing licence if you switch to ESET before your existing licence is due to expire
  • They will give you a 50% discount on all exchange licences purchased
  • Lastly (and this one is a beauty), they will give you up to 1 Day free Consulting from ESET to scope out the switch project

This coupled with the fact ESET Business Edition is probably the best business antivirus solution currently available makes the whole prospect of switching solutions a more attractive option.

Ransomware an increasing threat in 2010

by patmore 4. April 2010 16:36

According to the Fortinet Threatscape March 2010 report, ransomware and scareware continue to be huge threats.

"Riding off the coat tails of a hot February, ransomware threats dominated our Top 10 malware list this report," said Fortinet in a recap of the month's activity. "Every single detection in our list, with the exception of HTML/Iframe.DN, resulted in either scareware or ransomware infesting the victim's PC."

Of interest was a ransomware threat known as "Total Security", which was spread by the Cutwail botnet. Another, W32/DigiPog.EP, emerged as a new threat in March. The ransomware locks out the system and kills off popular applications such as Firefox, until a valid code is entered into a field presented by the application. Victims obtain the code by sending an SMS message to a provided number, no doubt premium rate.

"While SMS-based ransomware threats aren't particularly new, it is the first time one has landed in our Top 10 list, and provides further proof that the rise of ransomware is well on its way," Fortinet said.

Bredolab and Pushdo were the two most frequent botnets used to distribute threats, according to the report. They are spearheading a gradual move away from scareware in favor of ransomware as criminal business models become ever more sophisticated. However, they are competing for market share with another botnet called Sasfis.

Predictably, over a six-month period, total malware peaked sharply in the runup to Christmas, before decreasing in January and reaching a low in February and the report found that March saw a gradual rise.

TJ Max Cyber Theif Jailed for 20 Years

by patmore 28. March 2010 02:32

Albert Gonzales, who used a custom data theft trojan to steal 96 million credit and debit card numbers from retailer TJ Maxx (including daughter companies HomeGoods and Marshalls), has been sentenced to 20 years in prison. Gonzales still faces sentencing for his role in the data theft leveraged at Heartland Payment Systems, 7-11 and other companies.

While carrying out his crimes, Gonzales was receiving a $75,000 annual salary as a paid informant for the U.S. Secret Service. In both the TJ Maxx and Heartland Payment Systems heists, the presence of the data theft trojans went unnoticed for considerable periods of time, prolonging the exposure and increasing the damage done.

According to Terence Spies, Chief Technology Officer at Voltage Security, "The payments industry is working hard to implement new technologies that remove credit card data from networks and databases, either by encrypting it or by storing proxy tokens. These techniques give an attacker that breaks into a merchant or processor environment nothing but useless random numbers."

Spies cautions, "Rolling these technologies out will not be trivial by any means, but technology suppliers, merchants, processors, and standards groups are all working together to make these systems strong and cost efficient to implement."

Voltage participates in several of these initiatives. According to Voltage, several payment processors, including Heartland Payment Systems, have already adopted systems like this that  they are starting to roll out to merchants.

Antivirus Software - Benefits of 30 Day Trials

by patmore 11. March 2010 20:08

Whether you have recently purchased a new computer or just want to secure your old reliable (or not so reliable in some cases), there are so many different types of antivirus software out there that it is almost impossible not to find something that will please you.

Although not tangible, antivirus software comes in different shapes and sizes, literally. The layout of the software can vary depending on which brand and which distribution you purchase. Subsequently there are two decisions you need to make when you buy antivirus. Three if you include your budget range within the decision process.

The first thing to consider is 'do you need antivirus software'. Some computers do not require protection, such as apple macs and linux based operating systems. Secondly, you should consider what brand you should purchase. Usually one would think that comparing antivirus software is like comparing eggs with eggs; they are the same. But this isn't always the case. Many users have different opinions on antivirus software.

Ultimately the decision is yours. People tend to choose the application with the biggest market share, such as McAfee or Symantec. However, this is not such a good idea with so many better but lesser known products available.

You might want to visit sites that offer reviews on antivirus products. Some retailers allow the purchaser to return and write a review on the product they purchased. If you use this method you will most likely get a range of honest reviews from both novice and power users.

The next and best method is to is to simply trial a selection of products prior to purchase. Most antivirus products are available for a 30 day trial prior to purchase. This enables you to take a test trial and ensure the product is suitable for you and your computer before you part with your hard earned money.

Ultimately, because software can be easily uninstalled and replaced, you are rarely forced to stick with any provider for any means. Antivirus internet security software is not an exception. So go on, trial some software and purchase the one that's right for you. If after a while you change your mind, you will only have to wait for the remainder of the licence before you are able to swap for a different brand.

Antivirus Software - What exactly does it do?

by patmore 9. March 2010 17:08

Antivirus software is a pc program that detects, identifies, prevents and takes action to disarm or remove malicious software programs such as viruses and worms. Malware (which is derived from combining the terms malicious and software) is the term generally used to refer to such harmful programs.

Let us look at some of them:

Viruses: These are programs that attach themselves to other programs or documents and replicate to cause damage to PC.

Worms: These are specifically designed to make extensive use of emails to spread rapidly.

Trojans: These are typically programs which appear harmless but are damaging and malicious in intent.

Zombies: Are programs that install themselves on PCs and remain dormant until an external event triggers them into action. They can damage the computer, steal personal information to transmit it to an unauthorised email account or even set up a remote control access to one's computer.

All of these malware are referred to as viruses in common parlance.

Antivirus is intended to prevent, detect, disable or remove from the PC all malware which is done by the antivirus engine which scans the PC to look for tell-tale signs of these malicious programs. This is called signature based detection and involves searching for known malicious patterns in executable code.

Once detected the software takes action such as to clean, delete or quarantine. However, it is possible for a user to be infected with a new virus with no signature existing. These viruses can be detected by looking for known malicious code or slight variations of such codes in files.

It is important to understand how viruses spread. With increasing use of the internet the most common route for their spread is obviously through email. They can also spread by sharing disks, network drives and by internet downloads. They can not spread on their own and must be run or executed by some one to cause damage.

Viruses can infect the boot sector ot the PC if the user inadevrtantly, boots his PC from an infected disk. Other viruses can spread by simply opening an infected document.

In order to efficiently counter such threats, one needs to buy antivirus software that is updated regularly, is easy to use, detects and cleans all threats, and offers a comprehensive computer protection package such as Kaspersky Antivirus and Kaspersky Internet Security.

New P2P file sharing Worm Detected - Spybot.AKB

by patmore 23. February 2010 16:51

Experts have identified a worm that spreads through P2P networks and emails called Spybot.AKB.

The worm which was recently detected fools users by appearing as a social network invitation or a Google job application response. Once installed, it redirects searche results for keywords such as ‘hotel’, ‘weather, or ‘airlines’ to infected false pages.

Spybot.AKB spreads itself via email or peer-to-peer file sharing. One email disguises itself as be a Twitter invite from another user, containing a file that users supposedly run to join. The P2P infection involves the worm copying and renaming itself with the filename of a popular windows application, such as Norton Antivirus.

Spybot.AKB is self-protecting. It will “perform a set of actions to compromise the security level of infected PCs, adding itself to Windows firewall whitelist rules and disabling the error reporting service and user access control.

Be alert on file sharing sites and make sure your antivirus software is up to date.
